How I Cleared up my Acne in Two Months!

Anyone who watches my Instagram stories will be aware that I’ve been on a bit of a *journey* with acne over the past few months.

Despite our teenage years being renowned as the ‘peak time’ for developing skin issues, I actually didn’t suffer too badly with acne back then, aside from a few years of having spots on my forehead. At the time, yeah, it was a bit rubbish and did leave a few scars but really, I thought I’d got off quite lightly.

Around the start of this year, however, I suddenly started developing spots on my chin. They crept up on me gradually and before I knew it my whole chin area was covered in angry, itchy and painful acne.

Now because I had never really suffered with acne before, I put it down to stress or that I just wasn’t eating very well or taking good enough care of my skin, so my first plan of action was to get into a better skincare routine. I bought a load of products from my favourite brand, Eu Thermale Avene.

Now Avene’s products are very reasonably priced, but I bought so many different bits that I ended up spending a fair amount. And unfortunately, it didn’t give me the results I was after. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a huge fan of their products, in fact, a few of them remain as staples in my skincare routine (side note: their “Extremely Gentle Cleanser Lotion” is the best, most gentle yet effective makeup remover I have ever used).

It was at this point that I started to consider that there might be something underlying causing me to suddenly break out in acne at the age of 21, so I booked an appointment with my GP. This was when I started having tests to see if there was anything else going on (which is still ongoing). I was also prescribed the antibiotic erythromycin and Octenisan – an antimicrobial cleanser to use as a daily face wash.

It was around this time that I was also introduced to The Healing Essence skincare by a few friends from Whitby. Looking on Holly’s Facebook and Instagram, there were some incredible transformations, so I was super excited to give it a try. The first products I bought were a hydrating toner and an aloe vera moisturiser, which set up the basis for my current skincare routine, and the one that has ultimately improved my skin beyond what I could have ever imagined.

After about a month of using The Healing Essence skincare, I went back and added a gorgeous honey and oatmeal scrub and a scar treatment serum to my routine. The scrub really appealed to me as, like all the other products, it was really raw and natural, and actually almost identical to a scrub I used to make myself to help with my seborrheic dermatitis. In fact, I’ve been using the scrub to help with a flare up of this which is affecting my ears at the moment.

I have also been tweaking my diet a little bit to incorporate some more skin-friendly foods. Now, don’t get me wrong, my diet is far from ‘clean’ or perfect, but I do try to make some informed choices. A few things I have really made an effort to change in my diet over the past month or so are:

  • Incorporating more healthy fats into my diet e.g. avocado, almond butter + flaxseed (also a good source of omega 3).
  • Eating skin-friendly fruits such as blueberries.
  • Cutting down on dairy and replacing with plant milks. Oat and soya are my favourite, (although I’ve cut down on soya slightly as there is some evidence to suggest it isn’t great in large quantities). I also love coconut milk in my oats on a morning.
  • Generally eating more fruit and vegetables (roast veg is my new obsession).
  • Cutting down on carbs (I struggle with this a lot so this is only a small reduction so far).
  • Eating less processed foods (again, don’t get me wrong I love a good hearty dominos every now and then).

Now, 2 months after I started the combination of antibiotics, making small dietry adjustments and using The Healing Essence skincare, my skin has improved so much I almost can’t believe it! It feels so healthy and glowy in a way it never has done before, and I’m so excited to see what the next few months have in store! As you can see in thee pictures, I basically just have scarring left, which I’m attending to with my scar treatment serum.

My current skincare routine is:

Morning

  1. Wash face with Octenisan cleanser and warm water.
  2. Pat face dry and apply The Healing Essence hydrating skin toner with a cotton wool pad.
  3. Leave for a few minutes.
  4. Apply Avene SPF 20 light moisturiser.

Evening

  1. Remove makeup/dirt with Avene extremely gentle cleanser and a cotton wool pad.
  2. Wash face with Octenisan cleanser and warm water.
  3. (Apply The Healing Essence Honey and Oatmeal scrub. Leave for 5-10 minutes then massage into skin and rinse. TWICE PER WEEK.)
  4. Pat face dry and apply The Healing Essence hydrating skin toner with a cotton wool pad.
  5. Leave for a few minutes.
  6. Apply The Healing Essence Aloe Vera moisturiser.
  7. (Apply a few drops of the Healing Essence scar treatment serum and massage into skin. TWICE PER WEEK.)

My plan for the next few months is to have a little while without antibiotics and see if I can keep my skin healthy and glowing, so fingers crossed on that – I will keep you updated over on my Instagram stories.
